Mama Can’t Buy You Love
by Miles H. Rost
“Why are we in a bowl shop?” Harley asked.
“Mom told me to pick something, and she’ll buy it,” Clarissa replied.
“But, sweetheart, whenever she buys you something, you’re depressed for weeks.”
“It makes me happy.”
“Clarissa, it doesn’t. Your mom doesn’t want you happy. She wants you obedient.”
“Then what do you propose, Harley?”
“Why not let me make you happy?”
“How would you make me happy? Can you buy me things?”
“No, but instead you’ll have a home to call your own. And a husband who loves you.”
“A what…?”
“Would you marry me?”
Clarissa dropped the bowl.
Nicely done.
Thanks! I wasn’t very proud of this one, but the comments have helped.
Worth the dropped bowl.
Very!
Ahh, sweet.
Thank ya! ^_^
Hope Harley has an accurate read on her, else it might just turn hairy.
The song helps with the direction.
You break it, you bought it.
Being “old school,” I’d probably go with the Beatles instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srwxJUXPHvE
I felt Elton would just work well enough. 🙂
She was THAT surprised! I hope they have a happy ending, and that Mama isn’t going to continue to insist on obedience from her daughter.
She never expected something so simple, yet so wonderful.
No one can make you happy. Only you, can make you happy. But a loving person to spend your life with is the best of the best. :o) Great story. I hope Mama gets that.
Absolutely right, Mrs Completely, absolutely right!
Who knows about Mama’s reaction. She may not even have one if the young lady does accept Harley’s proposal.
Lovely story.
Thanks!
I fear for her, something about Harley feels wrong. But that’s just my reading of the story
The song helps in ushering you in the direction. 🙂
What a bowl breaking proposal, beats a ball breaking rejection any day!!
I’m cringing with the words “ball breaking”…
Sorry 😳
Wonder if she was surprised or startled? Was it deliverance or new bondage? I wonder!
The world may never know…unless you listen to the song! ^_^
What Mrs. Completely said. And it is always nice to share one’s happiness with another happy soul!
Especially if that person is offering simplicity.
It’s a well-told tale, Miles, and you’ve given us plenty of depth in the characters..
I rather agree with Michael. Harley sounds suspect. But even if he’s genuine, he will have a hard time making Clarissa happy, because of her family history. She’s learned to be obedient when manipulated, and she’ll persist in that strategy unless she learns a lot more about herself.
Good story!
It’s all in the music. 🙂
Lovely tale. Well crafted.
Thank ya! I didn’t feel it was that well done, but now that I look at it…it makes sense.
Ooops! A shattering proposal. Nicely done.
Thanks, Norma! ^_^
There’s a lot of back story in your hundred words – well done.
Yes, there is. The song also helps explain it!
Ha ha – loved this! I wasn’t sure where it was going, and you managed to cram so much into so few words.
