Friday Fictioneers – Tea In The Sahara

(Author’s note: I’ve been gone the last few weeks, partially due to overtime at work, but also partially because I’ve been dealing with a massive mental health issue that has cropped up more and more as the years go by. I decided to be proactive, but that required me to be away. Anyhow, I’m back to a form of equilibrium, and here’s my next piece of work.)

Tea In The Sahara
by Miles H. Rost

The average person wouldn’t understand the comfort of a whistling tea kettle.

They wouldn’t understand it if they were posted to a Mauritanian outpost for years on end.

Five long years sitting with miles of sand in front of me, and 2 miles from the ocean behind me. All to collect a long dead currency for travel along the coast and security from invaders.

I was relieved of my post and sent to Tangier, my next post being a trade house clerk. Much busier, but not as dusty. And the comforting tea kettle whistles to me that everything’s quite okay.

Moonies!

by Miles H. Rost

“Michelle! Come here!”

Yumi Tanaka bounced on her 12-year old feet, waiting for her gaijin homestay to come and join her.

“What is it, Yumi?”
“You remember that show I wanted to show you?”
“No, I think I was studying…”
“Come on, Michelle. Time to go watch!”

Michelle Davis was pulled into the living room of the comfortable suburban Tokyo home. Plopping down on some pillows, the show started.

“What’s the name of this show?”
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon!”
Ugh. Sounds weird…”

<15 years later>

“Welcome to L.A.X.” the speakers droned.

Michelle waited at the gate, smiling. A short blue-haired bob jumped up and down.

“Ami!”
Yumi Tanaka’s eyes turned around and opened wide!
“Rei!”

“I missed you!” they said as they hugged.

Message In A Bottle – Friday Fictioneers

It’s been a busy week at the Musical Fiction Factory, or at least in the office…so here’s this week’s Fictioneers story. I have some time off next week, so there’s a good likelihood that a few stories will be in the offing on my vacation days.

Message In A Bottle

We sat at the table of the faux Chinese restaurant, like we do every Sunday.  I picked up the bottle of hot sauce to douse my fried rice, when I saw it.

“Marie, there’s a note in this hot sauce.”

“What? Well, open it up and get it out!”

Sighing heavily, I did  what she told me. I pulled out the long note, and read it out loud.

“My name is Stewart Copeland. This is my SOS. I’m stuck in the Sriracha factory. I hope that someone gets my message in a bottle.”

I only wonder how long that message has been in that bottle…
